Jodhpur is a city in India's Rajasthan state. It is one of the most visited cities in Rajasthan, because of its history, unique architecture, rich culture and colourful traditions. Visitors fondly refer to Jodhpur as the Blue City, because of the stunning bright blue painted houses in the old town. The city is a beautiful destination which enchants visitors and captures the majesty of the state's royal past.
Established by Rao Jodha in 1459, Jodhpur became the capital of the Marwar Kingdom. The most recognisable landmark is the Mehrangarh Fort. It is a massive, ancient fort perched 400 feet up on a rocky cliff above the city. It features impressive walls and even more impressive carvings. Visitors climbing the fort, have breathtaking views of the blue city below. The fort also has a museum where you can see the fort artifacts and an exhibition of armor, utensils and other royal artifacts.
Another must-see site is Umaid Bhawan Palace, part hotel. It was built in the 20th century, which is fairly new compared to Jodhpur's older landmarks. It is one of the last great palaces of India and an example of Indo-colonial architecture.
Jodhpur has colourful local bazaars including Sardar Market, located near the iconic Clock Tower. The area is filled with vendors selling handicrafts, textiles, spices and colourful Rajasthani outfits. Be mindful of what you choose, as the food is also great too. with incredible dishes like mirchi vada, mawa kachori.
